There are no surprises when it comes to having to ship expensive items by freight that it is going to cost some dollars. Shipping large items is not an easy task, and it will cost hundreds if not thousands for you to get them from point A to point B. There are determining factors when it comes to shipping freight to different locations. These are some of what will decide the final costs:
1. The Location
Geographical locations for where your freight is picked up and where it will be dropped off are some of the most important factors. These two points matter as they dictate the distance between the delivery and pickup points and will influence the overall price of shipping.
Some of the most expensive areas to ship freight based on this metric include:
South and North Dakota
Areas within the Dakotas are some of the most expensive areas to ship freight, especially cars. These two states do not get much shipment traffic throughout the year, so you would either have to wait for other cargo to go to a location, or ask for a secluded shipment. Another factor for these states is the extreme weather conditions that can occur and cause dangerous traffic situations. The interstate system in the Dakotas is also not the best when compared to areas like Los Angles or Miami.
Montana
Shipments are expensive to the State of Montana for much the same reasons as the Dakotas. Montana also has a poor interstate system.
Wyoming
Wyoming is a beautiful state but is not a popular one for shipping freight. This state also has a poor highway system and is much like that of the Dakotas and Montana.
2. Price of Fuel
Once the distance is determined for shipping the freight, fuel prices will also impact the rates to ship the item or items. If fuel prices have experienced a hike, the cost to ship will also increase. This factor will also change if prices of fuel decrease which can also influence shipping costs to go down.
3. Weather Conditions
Some shipping routes have bad or even extreme weather conditions which will impact shipping costs. In these areas, you want someone who can expertly handle your item, but it will also cost a bit more to send freight to and from these areas.
4. Traffic Conditions Along the Route
The level of activity or traffic along the route needed to pick up or drop off your freight also impacts the cost of shipping. If the port where you will be shipping to has a lot of traffic, this factor will play in your favor. If you are shipping to a less frequented location, it will cost more as the shipping company will either have to wait for more cargo or alter the location.
5. Distance to Highways and Interstates
Once the freight is delivered to a port, the distance from that location to a highway or interstate will influence the total cost, since this is also part of the total distance in the shipping process.
